Every time I go to buy a new hair product I stand in the hair aisle for at least 20 minutes just picking up and putting down 30 different options. The beauty section is a maze of shampoos, detanglers, curl definers, conditioners, deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners, oils and edge controls. There are literally hundreds of different products on the shelf. I am also extremely indecisive so that does not help either. I stand there and debate price, quality, quantity, company, ingredients and anything else you can think of. My biggest concern is wasting my money on something that doesn’t work. Anyone who has been in my shoes also knows that natural hair products are not cheap, especially when you need several different items to create a new look. But one thing at a time, let’s talk about something everyone needs: a cheap curl definer.

The Curl Activator Cream by Cantu is a great option. I was always skeptical when buying Cantu’s products because they were so inexpensive. I thought they must not be very good if their products are cheap. To my surprise, the Curl Activator Cream works extremely well. I bought it from Walgreens for around 7 dollars which I was excited about because I shop frugally.

The first thing I do, if i can, is smell the product. The Curl Activator has a faint scent of coconut. The first ingredient is water which is a must in natural hair products. Think about how you need water to stay healthy and hydrated. Your hair is no different. My favorite thing about this product is the consistency: lightweight and slippery. It is very wispy and easy to apply, so it doesn’t weight down your hair which will allow your hair to be at its fullest. It’s slipperiness help detangle the knots and coils of your hair. This is a curl definer that you won’t have rake in your  your hair. It triples as a moisturizer, curl definer and detangler. It left my hair soft and curly.

The only thing that doesn’t quite work for me about this product is its holding ability but that could be easily fixed if you add gel or mousse when layering your products. If you want a lightweight moisturizer that smells great and defines your curls this is a product I suggest you try.

Pros:

  • It’s less than 10 dollars, Cheap!
  • Available anywhere: Walgreens, Target, Walmart, Local Beauty Supply
  • Faint coconut smell
  • Water based
  • Lightweight
  • Moisturizing, detangling, and defining
  • No harsh ingredients
  • ★★★★1/2 (out of 5)

Cons:

  • For thicker hair, may need to add gel or mousse
