Hazelwood Central’s Culinary II classes sprinkled some fun on the beginning of the second semester with a cupcake war.

Ms. Sullins’ Culinary II students were asked to participate in a competition, similar to the TV series, Cupcake Wars, that appears on the Food Network. Over 3 class periods, students prepared batter, and decorated cupcakes in interesting ways, finishing on January 11th and 12th for judging.

“I learned about it from a Family and Consumer Science Teachers group I am a member of online,” said Ms. Sullins.

While learning to take part in a little friendly competition, the students were assessed over what they earned about cupcakes, icing preparation and decorating skills.

The students were required to create a design that followed a specific theme. They had to use 12-18 cupcakes, layout a blueprint, and put it all together. They were then graded over appearance, flavor, texture, presentation and creativity.

Clarice Jones, a senior at Central, felt that the event was meant for many things. “I fell that it was a way to be creative and experiment with baking,” Clarice claimed.

They were a few complaints about the recipe that Ms. Sullins gave the students, but they still had a good time.

“The worst part was the recipe. It wasn’t the best tasting, but the best part was decorating,” Alexis Jackson, a senior at Central, stated.

According to Ms. Sullins, there was one winner from each class. The fish group won in 7th hour and the Carnival group won in 4th hour.

The participants and Ms. Sullins was very pleased with the results admitting that the event was fun and that they would love to see it again in the future.

“It went really well and I think the kids had a lot of fun with it. This was the first year I have done this project but I loved seeing how creative my students were, their planning process, teamwork, and how everything came together on the final day,” Ms. Sullins added.
