Thinking about college? Here’s some advice from a few Central teachers

When we reach high school, college is not only a word we hear very often, but a reality most must face. Teachers can be the key to making it to the right college, and they also faced the transition from high school to the “real world.” Here are some of the teachers at Hazelwood Central, where they went to school, and some advice you might find helpful when considering a college.

 

Mrs. Bober

Major(s): Masters in teaching (Lindenwood) and Masters in Biological Education

Do you have any advice for a student considering a major?

“Remember that college costs, so pick something you like, but always have a back-up plan.”

 

Mrs. Docket

College(s): Missouri State University and Arkansas State University

Major(s): Bachelor’s Degree in education and social studies, and Master’s Degree in science and educational theory & practice

Do you have any advice for a student trying to consider a major?

“Do what you enjoy and interests you, follow that path. Take time to explore things to find your interests.”

 

Ms. Harbaugh

College(s): Truman State University

Major(s): Pre-med in biology and a minor in chemistry

Do you have any advice for a student considering a major?

“Do what you enjoy, because you will be doing it for a long time… If you don’t enjoy it, you may dread every day.”

Major(s): Undergraduate in history and Master’s Degree in social studies education

Do you have any advice for a student trying to consider a major?

“I would encourage people to find a test to pin-point their interests… That put me in the right direction.”

 

Ms. Kintz

Do you have any advice for a student considering a major?

“Most likely, you are going to change your major at least once, and that’s okay. You just have to go with the flow.”

 

Ms. Spencer

Major(s): Undergraduate in middle school math (UMSL) and Administration for principle (Lindenwood)

Do you have any advice for a student considering a major?

“Think about what you like to do in high school and make sure you know your basics… Try to find something you’re passionate about, it’s never too late.”

Major(s): General History

Going into college, did you already know you wanted to be a teacher?

“No, I went into biology pre-med, and after a year I realized that it wasn’t for me… My love for history pushed me to be a teacher.”

Advice: “Don’t declare a major freshman year, that’s the time to take your basics and find yourself as an adult, your major will most likely come to you.”

Do you have any advice for a student considering a major?

“I would just say you should just try to find something you really like and follow that, instead of focusing on a ‘career.”
